Testing cutting-edge technologies and data-driven solutions to counteract the impacts of climate change
Greenhouse gas emissions produce climate-related harms that disproportionately impact the poor in the developing world. To confront this challenge, policymakers must partner with private sector actors and citizens to build innovative policies that spur inclusive, sustainable growth while protecting vulnerable citizens from environmental and climate hazards such as pollution, extreme weather, and loss of livelihoods. At Inclusion Economics, our research focuses on two potentially powerful policy tools: information and markets.
First, we seek to understand what information and resources citizens need to protect themselves from pollution and climate-induced natural disasters.
Second, we generate policy-relevant insights to adapt market-based solutions to developing country contexts in order to limit polluting behaviors and ecosystem loss. Our ongoing work to develop and pilot emissions markets led to the launch of the world’s first emissions trading scheme on particulate matter in India. More recent work explores building local institutions and policies that can respond to these global challenges.
