Event Description
India has been a global leader in building the architecture to improve the efficiency and equity of rural work and livelihoods programs. Researchers at Inclusion Economics have collaborated with the Ministry of Rural Development since 2013 to evaluate these innovations and understand how they can be leveraged to improve outcomes for vulnerable households at the last mile. With this event, we aim to showcase how collaborations between policymakers, researchers, and private sector actors can drive innovative and impactful work and livelihoods programming at the last mile.
The in-person symposium consists of two research and policy sessions. Both these sessions will feature a research presentation, followed by a policy discussion moderated by a thought leader in the domain. In the first session, Dr. Rohini Pande, Henry J. Heinz II Professor of Economics, Director of the Economic Growth Center, and Faculty Director of Inclusion Economics, will present case studies on streamlining benefit transfers and fostering inclusion in MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme), India's flagship workfare program. Dr. Maulik Jagnani, Assistant Professor in the Fletcher School and Department of Economics at Tufts University, will present a case study in the second session on enabling flood resilience through community early warning systems.
Speakers at the event include: Shri Charanjit Singh (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India), Roshan Nair (United States Agency for International Development), Karan Agarwal (Google), Dr. Rohini Pande (Yale University), and Dr. Maulik Jagnani (Tufts University).
